How much sleep do I really need? A simple question we often ask ourselves but we do not quite know the answer a lot of the time. We all know that sleep is vital to us as humans and that if we do not get adequate sleep then it could lead to unwanted side effects. These may include reduced focus, irritability, reduced motivation, & less energy just to name a few.

So we know what happens when you do not get enough sleep but we still do not know how much we need.

According to the National Sleep Foundation the amount of sleep someone needs depends on their age. For newborn babies 0-3 months old it is recommended that they get 14-17 hours of sleep, infants 4-11 months old should be getting 12-15 hours, toddlers 1-2 need 11-14 hours, Preschoolers age 3-5 need 10-13 hours, children 6-13 years old need 9-11 hours, teenagers 14-17 should be getting 8-10 hours, adults 18-64 need 7-9 hours, and 65+ need 7-8 hours.

Now we know how much sleep we need each night to stay healthy but in a world powered by technology it can be hard to get a good amount of sleep each night.

To fall asleep better it is recommended that you stay away from screens 30 minutes to an hour before bed. Another tip which may be obvious is to be comfortable. If you have trouble falling asleep you should try to make sure your bed and clothes you are sleeping in are the most comfortable.

So next time you lay down to go to sleep after a long day keep these tips in mind and hopefully you will get better rest.
