Although summer may be over, all of the excitement for movies hasn’t left anyone. Over the summer a total of over 74 people visited the theater.
This year, two of the most conflicting movies came out on the same night! One of these movies is Oppenheimer. Starring actors like Rami Malek as David Hill, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer and Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer. This Movie was able to rake in 890 million dollars at the price of only 100 million dollars. “It was a good movie because they used real explosions rather than CGI effects,” said Haydn Schroeder (‘25).
The other movie to come out on July 21 was The Barbie Movie. This movie was highly anticipated by fans when it first got announced back in September of 2009 (ask if citation is needed). Luckily, with the star studded cast of Will Ferrell as Mattel CEO, America Ferrera as Gloria, Ariana Greenblatt as Sasha, and the amazing duo of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken it did not disappoint. That statement is made clear when you look at how much the movie was able to earn compared to how much it cost to make. It cost Universal Studios 145 million dollars to make, but was able to earn a whopping 1.34 billion dollars. “It’s a fun movie and it felt like everyone was included in the movie and it worked with all age groups,” said Madelynn Briscoe (‘26).
Another movie to have come out this season was the sequel to Spider-Man Into the Spider Verse, Spider-man Across the Spider Verse looks upon the idea of its predecessor and expands it into a massive multiversal adventure through their so-called Spider Verse. With a cast of Jason Schwartzman as Spot, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider Punk, Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakaar, Oscar Isaac as Spider-Man 2099, Hailee Steinfeld as Spider-Gwen, and Shameik Moore as Miles Morales they were able to earn 690 million dollars with a 100 million dollar budget. “I like the animation style, and it had good action sequences and I thought it was really interesting,” said Nicholas Mintert (‘26).
Having come out in 2009 Princess and the frog produced 271 Million dollars with a budget of only 105 Million dollars. Another Disney classic has taken second place as Holt’s favorite. Another classic love story, but with a prince and princess also made up a lot of kids’ childhoods. Starring Anika Noni Rose as Tiana, Bruno campos as Prince Naveen, Jennifer Cody as Charlotte La Bouff, Jennifer Lewis as Mama Odie, and Keith David as Dr. Facilier. “It was a cute love movie and a childhood movie that I grew up watching,” said Zoey Walker (‘26).
Coming out one year after Princess and the Frog, Tangled made over 592.4 Million dollars with a budget of 260 Million dollars to create the movie. Tangled is one of Holt’s favorite movies. Starring Zachary Levi as the voice of Flynn, Amanda Moore as Rapunzel, and Donna Murphy as Mother Gospel. “I used to watch that movie a lot in my childhood and I really resonate with the character Rapunzel, Which was a little odd, but I just always wanted to be like Rapunzel,” said Skylar Lindstrom (‘24).
