It’s the journey they love, the progress they make, every dive they take. Experience is key, but so is the joy it brings. Holt’s girls swim team enjoys the thrill of these races, the water flowing through them, much like their determination.
For some girls, like Emma Nicotra (‘27), swimming has always been a part of their lives. It brings them joy, connect with one another, and show off the skills they have mastered over time.
“I love to swim because I’ve done it ever since I was four years old.” Nicotra said. “It’s always been a sport that I’ve been good at.”
Some of the other girls who have been swimming time and time again have had some hardships to deal with, but continue to keep pushing through these and coming out on top. One swimmer, Madi Bynum (‘25), didn’t let these hardships affect her swimming career.
“I had gotten injured a few years ago and I was still doing club swim at the time,” Bynum said. “I had a great team, great people, (to support me).”
Swimming inspires these girls to push themselves. The team mainly focuses on speed and endurance for races. All of these aspects of the sport take strong will and determination.
“You’re always tired and we do a lot of laps, long distances. We do interval training and sprinting,” Adriana Diaz (’26) said. “(My goal after school is) to continue swimming over the summer and hopefully cut down my (personal bests).”
The girls don’t let it stop them from doing what they love. They continue to help each other and cheer one another on during competitions.
On February 6, the girls won second place in the Girls Varsity Championship. The team can accomplish anything as long as they stay determined, stay positive and have fun.
