Ending April off with a bunch of great movies, and even one incredible show that I felt had to at least be mentioned, considering the impact it’s had in the past month since its Netflix debut.
We’re starting off super strong with the incredible World War One film, 1917, It follows two british soldiers who are tasked with the near impossible mission of going all the way to deliver an important message to call off a doomed offensive attack, which is a trap set up for the British Troops by the Germans. The film is unique in the sense that it was filmed in such a way that it comes off as one long continuous shot. The camera barely taking a break from its movement. It’s an extremely emotional watch, and constantly keeps the viewer on their toes with the action. A solid five stars for my Letterboxd and a film I will definitely be rewatching.
Next on our list is the absolute classic, “Kill Bill: Vol 1”, Quentin Tarantino is the master of fast paced, yet symbolic action movies. Usually gory, usually with incredibly unique characters. Think of Vincent Vega and Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction, and, in this film’s case, “The Bride”. We follow a bride who is shot and (attempted to be) killed by her ex on her wedding day, as she awakes from her coma to exact revenge on those who wronged her on that fateful and tragic day. Another awesome five star film for me, a classic that everyone has to watch at least once. With an unforgettable sword fight scene between Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu.
Probably my favorite film watched during the lovely month of April is the artsy romantic-horror film “Bones and All”. Recommended to me by a friend, it follows the story of a young woman named Maren who is played by Taylor Russell, who is a cannibal. As she meets another cannibal who is portrayed by Timothee Chalamet and they embark on a cross country road trip to find Maren’s mother and the truth about where she came from. It has an insane twist ending that you will never see coming, and is one of the most original and raw (no pun intended) films I’ve watched in a very long time. Five Stars across the board once again.
Our last entry is a bit of a departure from what I’m used to writing about, it’s actually a limited series on Netflix. And while I’m not that much of a TV show person because of my short attention span, I binge watched this entire 7 episode show in two days. The show is Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” It’s based on the one-act comedy show of the same name written by Richard Gadd, who also stars as the main character. It follows Gadd’s character, Donny, as he gets obsessively stalked and tormented by an older woman who he simply offered a free cup of tea to, which inadvertently helps him to work through his unresolved trauma. It’s up there with some of the best shows I’ve watched. And it managed to keep my attention the entire time. An absolutely transfixing and jaw-dropping watch. And for that, I give it five stars.
Ending with the same warning I end most of these with, always do your proper research on potential triggers before you watch any of these movies or TV Shows, they’re all incredible watches and definitely deserving of some of your time and attention!
