Gettin’ Thrifty
Ms. Krug’s fifth hour is currently experimenting with how creative they can be. They are designing their own outfit by first drawing a 2-dimensional sketch, then making it come to life by sewing and creating around a mini-figure. Designing an entire outfit by sketch seems near-impossible, but Ms. Krug breaks it down in a simpler way.
“A common misconception about fashion design is that you have to know how to draw, but that is completely wrong. In this class, we provide the students with miniature croquis’, or printed out body figures, which is what most big time fashion designers do,” said Ms. Krug.
So luckily, there are no stick figure drawings in this class, but sketching isn’t the only thing implemented in fashion design. You cannot forget about the actual physical sewing and putting together the outfit.
“Most people just assume that you’re throwing fabric around, but in reality there are a lot of technical and mathematical factors to this. The body is a 3-dimensional curved figure that your 2-dimensional fabric doesn’t fit around very well at first. That is why, on this project, I give the students the options of doing the sketches, or doing both,” said Ms. Krug.
This is the first year that the class has been added to our school and it sounds awesome, so there is still next year to sign up if you did not snag the opportunity this year!
