Trump Slams in Golden Globes Acceptance Speeches
Most Golden Globes acceptance speeches follow the same basic guidelines of thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press, the little people or anyone else that helped them get there. However, in this year’s speeches many stars spoke out against the President Elect, Donald Trump.
These celebrities used the Golden Globes as an opportunity to show their opinion on Trump.
Jimmy Fallon compared Trump to King Joffrey, an evil character from the Game of Thrones series. Fallon jokingly said the world would soon find out what life would be like if the king had survived. He also pointed out Trump’s trouble finding a performer for his inauguration.
Hugh Laurie, a British actor, joked about this being the final Golden Globes since, “it has the words Hollywood, foreign and press in the title … To some Republicans even the word association is slightly sketchy.”
Byron Howard is the co-director of Zootopia and wanted to let everyone listening know his film was not only meant for kids but for adults. The movie was meant to help adults embrace diversity, “even though there are people in the world who want to divide us using fear,” said Howard. Howard was unmistakably taking a jab at the future president.
Meryl Streep received the Cecil B. DeMille award and, while not saying Trump’s name, she spoke of him mocking a disabled reporter. Streep believes the president elect is sending the message it is okay to mock others. “When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.” said Streep in her passionate speech.
Some viewers are wondering whether the Golden Globes was the right time and place for these comments. The award ceremony has always been about the arts, so why are politics suddenly being brought into the mix?
