DECA

Deca is known mostly for their socials and the Deca Store in the cafeteria; but Deca does more than sell smoothies and popcorn. They compete and go all over America. Competitor Hunter Jurotich (‘18) says that his favorite thing about competing is  “the opportunity to grow my knowledge about marketing and the ability to compete with others.”

President Allie Berry (‘17) says that she loves “the connections that I have made with people. The real world applications that I have experienced.” You not only widen your range of friends, but you also learn how it really is in the real world.

When you are in Deca, you get to practice real world applications. Although you do have to pay a little fee for a shirt and to actually be in it, the fee is no more than $30, and you get to experience new things and places. If there is time, you even get to go shopping when you are finished or when they are having a break.

A lot of Jurotich´s love for Deca is the fact he gets to go places. His favorite place to go to was “Nashville for internationals¨ and he was only a sophomore. Not a lot of sophomores get to go places that are as far as nashville but a select few It was a new experience and his first time flying.

They don’t care who you are. They only care whether or not you want to put your time in it. You can be shy, weird, loud, tall, or short. Deca still wants you. If you want to work in the business world, DECA is the place for you. Although if you want to do DECA you do need to join marketing.

In competition you practice or role play your event, such as Business Finance or Sports and Entertainment Marketing. You are given real world problems and you have to solve them in ten minutes. There are events where you are able to compete with a partner and you are also able to just take a test if that is where your strengths is.

Jake Teater who is the only sophomore to be going on to state is especially happy. He feels that being the only ¨Sophomore going to State is also a really cool feeling. I really enjoy being so involved in our DECA chapter here at Holt.”  It is not easy being a sophomore and wanting to go to state. Jake Teater works pretty hard to be where he is. “My partner and I did many practice presentations in order to prepare for our presentation, and I also chose to re-read extra chapters in my marketing book to prepare for my Role-Playing event, “ said Teater. To go to state you have to be prepared to work hard.
