It’s that time of year again: flowers are blooming, temperatures are rising (well, sort of), birds are chirping, and the sweet sounds of metal drivers perfectly striking Titleist Pro V1’s are echoing from tee boxes everywhere.

It’s golf season.

The Indians come off another excellent season, completing their third straight undefeated season and winning the conference championship. Three juniors, now seniors, placed top 8 in the GAC; in the conference tournament, Kurt Matheney finished first, Dawson Bickel finished fourth, and Kyle Boggs finished eighth.

“We have a good chance of going undefeated again this year,” Bickel said, “but we have to stay motivated no matter who were are playing, whether in conference or not.”

Senior Aaron Spiegel also stresses the importance of not letting their confidence get the best of them. “We have to make sure we don’t get big heads and get cocky just because we’re handily beating conference opponents,” he said, “so we don’t go to the big tournaments and not play to our full potential.”

Matheney stresses the importance of building off of last year’s success. “We need to have that motivation to beat out the other competitors and carry over our success from last year into this year,” he said.

“For three of us on the team, it’s our last year playing golf competitively so we want to do the best we can possibly do,” Boggs added.

Bickel sets his aims high for this year’s squad as they return a plethora of talent from last year’s undefeated team. “Our goal is to try to make another run at sectionals, or even state,” he said. “We have the team to do it.”

The Indians open their season on March 27 at Bogey Hills Country Club. Good luck, and here’s to another great season.
