To the Losers Go the Spoils
It is that time of year again, the time when the worst teams in the NFL reap the benefits of being so horrendous the season prior.
I am talking of course, of the NFL Draft. Every year, the worst team in the NFL gets the chance to draft who they think the best player coming out of college is. As far as who that player is, opinions are often split among the NFL community. If the team gets the pick right, the course of their respective franchise is changed for the next 15 years. If not, every member of that front office better start looking for a new job.
There have been many successful number one picks in the draft before (Manning, Manning, Bradshaw, Elway, etc), and by the same hand, there have been many busts to walk across that stage after being picked number one (JaMarcus Russell, David Carr, Tim Couch, etc). No matter how you look at it, this year’s first overall pick will have the weight of the world on their shoulders trying to turn around a Cleveland Browns franchise that has been floundering since their founding (for the second time) in 1999.
The Browns have been on the clock for the entire year of 2017, and the widespread consensus is that they will select Texas A&M edge rusher Myles Garrett when the draft starts at 7:00 p.m. (CT). With that being said, there have been whispers that they will select North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky with the pick in hopes of answering their long standing quarterback problem.
Browns VP Sashi Brown says the team decided who they were picking two weeks ago, and that “only three or four people in the world” know who that is. It seems likely that they have settled on Garrett, but the Browns have been known to reach for a quarterback in the draft in the past (see Brandon Weeden, Johnny Manziel).
Happy draft day, and to the losers go the spoils.
