When to Turn it Off

When+to+Turn+it+Off

Cell phones have become a constant in most people’s lives especially teenagers. For the past few year teachers have struggled to keep students off phones during lessons and other times phones are not allowed in class. Phone policy after phone policy has been put into place but could the school district have found one that works?

Each teacher was given a double sided sign at the beginning of the year. One side is green and tells students the use of cell phones is allowed at that moment. The other side however is red restricts the use of cell phones.

This double sided system allows teachers to flip back and forth at different times during class. Since every teacher is different some may leave the sign on green or red all year whereas other may flip it multiple times in a class period. One thing is for sure, there will no longer be any confusion for students. In the past students would have to remember each individual teacher’s cell phone policy but now students can easily look at the sign and know the rule right away. For some teachers however getting used to the new policy is proving difficult because they have had their own policies for year.

If the sign is on red and a teacher’s sees a student using their phone the teacher will calmly ask the students to put the cellphone away. If the teacher has to ask twice the student will be asked to pack up their things and go to the office. Unlike before students will no longer be separated from their phones but sent to their principal with their cell phone. Hopefully this new way will continue to work well for the students and teachers of Holt.
