STL World Food Day
Every year at St. Louis World Food Day people of St. Louis help package food to feed the hungry in the St. Louis area and abroad. This year 505,806 meals were assembled in a single day by volunteers.
Among these volunteers was a assembly line of helpers from Holt’s National Honors Society. The Holt team consisted of Abby Hunt (‘18), Taylor Storms (‘18), Spencer Bogan (‘18), Devyn Akowicz (‘18), Kaleigh Westerhold (‘19), Paige Pieper (‘19), Katie Weber (19’), Kaitlyn Trantham (‘19), Rylie Struckmann (‘19), NHS sponsor Sarah Vogelman and two parents.
From eight pm to eleven pm High Schoolers filled the field house at John Burroughs School. Music was blasted over the speakers and the teenagers had a party while helping the hungry.
“It was really fulfilling to be apart of something so important. Seeing that many high school students giving up their Friday nights for such a good cause–feeding local St. Louis children–was really incredible. NHS was very grateful to be able to partake in the event.” said Hunt.
Volunteers from all the participating schools worked hard to help the hungry. The cost of each meals is approximately 25 cents. Every year six million children under the age of five die every year. Volunteers from ages seven and up help alleviate hunger locally and in Africa.
The National Honors Society volunteers packaged over 1,300 mac and cheese meals in three hours. Four volunteers started by putting a cheese packet, noodles and soy into the bags. Next, three volunteers make sure the bags weigh between 352 grams and 354 Grams. Two volunteers are waiting to seal the bags and hand them off the boxers. The rest of the volunteers were ready to put the meals into the boxes and seal them.
