Programs at the Public Library
The public library is a severely underused resource. Both in the way of books, and also programs and events.
Not many people realize, but public libraries have events and programs that anyone can go to. There is nerf battles, art clubs, fandom clubs, dungeons and dragons, and more.
In July every year, there is a nearly all day long event called Teen Fandom Con that is basically a mini Fandom Con. There are several panels throughout the day, all put on by other people at the event that signed up beforehand, which is something anyone can do. There is food trucks, a merch room, a cosplay contest, and more.
Everyone can find all of this on the district’s site by going to the Classes and Events tab and then clicking on Calendar and Registration. Then anyone can pick an age group and voila, all the events coming up. At the end of this article, there will be a link to that site.
If anyone has an idea for an event they want to see at the library, that is great! They can share the idea by going to T.A.B. It stands for Teen Advisory Board, and it is basically like a student council that has snacks and is a lot more laidback and funny. There is one for every branch, so everyone can go to the library closest to them instead of one a half an hour away.
It is honestly a lot of fun! Plus, every T.A.B attended counts for one community service hour.
Recently things like escape rooms, mystery murders, LGBTeens and allies, have started to pop up at more and more libraries, all because someone had the idea and wanted to see it happen.
I hope to see you at the library soon!
