Boys Basketball Preview
Boys basketball has finally begun. The varsity team’s first home game is on December 10 against Fort Zumwalt North at Holt, and the away games have already started. The season officially began on December 2 when the varsity team played against Rock Bridge at Troy Buchanan High School.
Although the season has just begun, the boy’s basketball team is already excited for all of the upcoming games.
Last year, the team finished with a 12-15 record. This year they hope to win districts and state.
“They are relentless workers. The players love the game. As a coach, I enjoy the fruits of their labor,” Coach Arnold said about this year’s team.
Their combined passion for playing ball and their hard work really pays off in the skill of the team.
Not only does the team work hard, but they are extremely close friends who care about each other. They are all excited to get to play together this season, and the seniors are sad that they must leave their team at the end of the year.
The team’s roster this year is full of talented players with a lot of potential. One of these students is Tyrone Williams (‘23), a point guard and shooting guard as well as the only freshman on the varsity team, a rarity in varsity basketball teams.
“It’s a big honor to play with older kids as a freshman. I’m excited to see how much better I can play,” Williams (‘23) said. The team values growth, and it’s exciting to see how they will all improve as the season progresses.
This year’s team captains, Cade Ellegood (‘20) and Jaylon Ashford (‘20), are excited about the new team and all of the members.
“I love that we are young, pick up things quick, and play hard,” Ashford (‘20) said.
In the game of basketball, only five players per team are allowed on the court at any time. The positions consist of point guard, defensive guard, center, offensive forward, and defensive forward. The game is split into four to 12 minute quarters.
In basketball, any basket scored from the outside to the three point arc will result in two points being scored. Successful free throws will result in two points being scored for your team. The number of free throws will depend on where the foul in the game was committed.
This team is sure to produce a lot of points for this up and coming season.
