This made it the fifth movie to ever reach $2 billion dollars in profit, as well as the highest grossing movie of all time.

Endgame isn’t the only Disney movie in the top ten. Out of the ten highest grossing films of 2019, five of them are Disney movies, including all of the top three movies. Looking at the list, there are a few obvious trends. First of all, superhero movies, i.e. Captain Marvel, Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home, were very popular this year, possibly due to the large amount released this year. Disney remakes and sequels were also popular this year with the live-action Aladdin remake, the live-action Lion King remake, and the fourth Toy Story movie all coming out this year.

While action, comedy, and horror movies were popular on this list, other movie genres such as romance were not on the list. The highest grossing romance movie was What Men Want in 36th place, which made $56 million in the United States.

When you look back at 2018, you see a similar pattern. The top five grossing movies were Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Incredibles 2, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and then Aquaman. Looking back over the past two years of film shows us that the most popular types of movies in this day and age are superhero movies, Disney movies, and other action movies. Drama, comedy, and horror are still semi-popular but not as well-loved as these action and family movies.

Although Black Panther earned the most money in 2018, it only earned $1.23 billion worldwide compared to Endgames record-breaking $2 billion. Another difference between the top movies of 2019 and 2018 is the ranking of romance movies. While the highest grossing romance in 2019 was ranked number 36 and made 56 million dollars in the United States, the highest grossing romance movie in 2018 was A Star Is Born, ranked 11th on the list, making 215 million dollars in the United States.

In 2020, there are many movies to be anticipated, and some that have already been released. In 2020, there are many action and superhero movies coming, which are likely to be popular based on the movie profit over the past few years. Birds of Prey, Black Widow and Wonder Woman 1984 are all coming out before the year is over. We’re also seeing some new sequels and remakes such as the live-action Mulan, A Quiet Place II, No Time To Die, and Ghost Busters: Afterlife. The 2020 movie line up is looking extremely promising.
