Give Me a Quibi
With everyone stuck inside, we all have a lot of time to watch shows. However, many have run into the problem of what to watch because most have already binge watched their favorite shows and are probably on their fifth run of watching The Office. But, a new streaming service has come with a very unique idea.
Quibi is a new streaming service where every episode is 10 minutes or less and it is all on your phone. You have probably seen a lot of commercials with people saying “give me a Quibi” to promote the service, perhaps even celebrities saying it. Not only is each episode 10 minutes or less, but the whole service is packed to the brim with celebrities. People like Will Arnett, Chance the Rapper, Kaitlin Olsen and Jennifer Lopez, they are even on a show called Thanks a Million where celebrities come on and surprise some of their biggest fans. Not only do they have celebrities everywhere you look, but any kind of show.
If you like horror there are shows like The Stranger, 50 States of Fright and Murder House Flip. Maybe comedy is more of your thing so there are shows like Agua Donkeys, Flipped and Chrissy Courthouse to watch. If you’re not into that, you may like more things that get you thinking like documentaries. They have those too, with I Promise, Night Gowns and Fierce Queen. They have every kind of show to satisfy anyone that gets Quibi. In its first week of being out, Quibi got 1.7 million downloads.
However, it is not all good news for this new streaming service. After the first week went by, the hype for the service went with it too, making the app drop to below the top 50 on the Apple store. Not only that, but some people are complaining about prices. Quibi offers a $4.99 a month pack with ads and then a $7.99 pack with no ads. Some think that this is too much just for these 10 minutes episodes compared to the many episodes and show other platform show for cheaper like Disney+, with $6.99 a month and Hulu with $5.99 a month. Not only is Quibi fighting with Hulu and Disney+, but they also have to worry about the powerhouse that is Nextflix.
As of now, Netflix has been on a roll with shows, especially since the Tiger King came out. With all of these things coming at Quibi, it seems like it may have been a rushed idea, seeing if this format would work. But maybe it still needs to grow to show its full potential, because if you remember Netflix just used to be a website that sent DVDs and now it one of the biggest companies right now in entertainment. Perhaps Quibi will be the next best thing or just another failed streaming service. Whichever one it is, it will not be the last streaming service in this endless war of trying to snatch Netflix’s crown.
