The dancer packs up her bags full of dance and school supplies getting ready for another 20 hour week of dancing and practice. She grabs her things and gets ready to go and do the art and sport of dance.
The definition of a sport goes like this, an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Normally, when we think of a sport we think of things like baseball or football. But, we often leave out sports like dance or cheer.
In our culture, dance is left out because people think that it’s just another art and there’s nothing special to it. Dance actually requires a lot of skill and athleticism to be able to do. Think about it this way, a baseball player practices throwing and hitting and running, but with dance, we practice the routine, the moves, the smiles that we make when we are on stage and getting it all http://rusbankinfo.ru/zaimy/zaymer/
together and clean. Now I’m not trying to down any other sport but I think more people need to be open to dance as a sport.
“Dancers like me do 10 plus dances, with regular practices of 20 plus hours a week,” said Amelia Keesey (24). “We take each dance, have to remember the whole thing, the cleans, the timing, the changes, the emotions, and the music. And then you add the technique. The turns, leaps, jumps, excestions, and tumbling. Adding all that together makes it a lot harder than just standing there and looking pretty.”
If we look deeper into the definition of a sport we see that it says that it’s an individual or team competing for entertainment. With competition dancers, we compete as a team or by ourselves for entertainment. With this definition of a sport, competition dance would fit into the category.
“In sports like baseball or football, when a player gets hurt everyone kneels until they are ok enough to get off the field and then we clap,” said Adirah Hepperman (24).” But in the sport of dance, if I fall on stage, no one is going to kneel for me. I have to get up and finish the dance strong.”
Competition dancers work really hard at what we do. Competitive dance is very different from regular dance. There are more, harder, practices. More time spent making sure the dances you compete will do well.
“In my opinion, Competitive dance is more of the sport of dance, and regular dance is more the art of dance,” said Ava Rubble (24). “Competitive dancers practice more and it puts in the competition part, that’s in the definition of a sport.”
Competition dancers do just as much work out as any other sport. We train, gain strength by taking regular dance classes, like ballet to gain leg strength, and so much more. Dancers put in just the same amount of effort as a baseball player, basketball, football, you name it. Because dancing isn’t just an art, it’s a true sport.
