Holt’s Varisty Girls Basketball Team breaking their huddle

On February, 8 Holt had it’s annual Coaches vs. Cancer game at Francis Howell Central. From the Coaches versus Cancer website: “For over 25 years, the Coaches vs. Cancer program, in collaboration with the National Association of Basketball Coaches, has united coaches and fans nationwide to help the American Cancer Society defeat a common enemy – cancer.” Holt and Francis Howell Central raised money for cancer research by using miracles minutes, raffle baskets and even giving all the admissions to the game are donated as well. Both boys and girls varsity teams played to help fundraise for the cause.

Girls played first, and unfortunately lost to Howell Central by a score of 59-24. After, the boys played and also lost by a score of 71-40. The girls overall record has now dropped to 8-12 falling in the third seed of their district bracket, while the boys record is now 12-12.

“It sucks that we lost, but we knew the competition was going to be hard going into it. The game was a lot of fun though and we played our hardest, so I’m glad we were able to help raise money for such a good cause. The Pink Night Game is always really hyped, and this was like a smaller version of that so we were all really excited about playing in it,” said Mackenzie Rutherford (’20).

Through their efforts Holt and Francis Howell Central were able to raise for cancer research between the two games. From Francis Howell Central’s Athletic director @FHCAD: “Huge shoutout to @HoltbasketballB and @Holt_Wilmes for their participation in our 7th annual ‘Paint it Pink’ game. Both coaches are class acts and have outstanding programs with great character!”  Despite the two losses, Holt is very proud of our basketball teams in helping raise money for such a noble cause, and is thankful to Francis Howell Central for bringing MIssouri High Schools together, in the fight against cancer.
