Over the years, Sony and Marvel shared the rights to Spider-Man. However, due to recent events, it has been reported that Spider-Man’s future is over within the Marvel name.

In 2015, Sony and Disney struck a deal to share Spider-Man in order to make Spider-Man Homecoming, released in 2015. That meant that Marvel could bring Spider-Man into the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) with Marvel characters, including Tony Stark, Nick Fury, and include Marvel events like the blip. The deal also included that Spider-Man was able to enter into the Marvel world starting with Civil War going into Infinity War then ending with well Endgame.

During all of this, Kevin Feige was the connective glue that kept it all in balance. Yet as a result of the feud, Feige will not be the lead producer of the next Spider-Man film. Sony then said in a statement that they had hoped the choice would change in the future, but they comprehend Disney’s choice in not allowing Feige to work on projects that Disney did not own.

“Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue,” Sony said. The original plan was to extend the deal with two new movie after Spider-Man Far From Home. That changed recently according to deadlines during negotiations between Sony and Disney.

Disney proposed that Sony and Disney split the profits 50/50, a change from the current 5/95 Marvel and Sony respectively. Disney also proposed having more rights to the next Spider-Man film and more influence over other Sony properties. Although according to sources Sony refused the offer.

Why? Well  Spider-Man Far From Home was a massive box office hit reaching 1.1 billion dollars, being the first Spider-Man movie to do so. Natural greed has to come into play since Spider-Man Far From Home just became Sony’s most profitable film of all time. So you can imagine that Sony does not want to share a dime of any future billions.

Fans all over social media have given backlash to Sony about the Sony and  Disney/Marvel feud. Many heartbroken fans all over the world are mourning for their fallen Avenger. “The Marvel movies have more money for Sony. So why is Sony putting up a fight? Many fans including myself feel that Spidey belongs in the MCU.” Morgan Dunn (‘21) said. If this feud may continue or be resolved, fans are unsure.

Walt Disney Studios D23 actor Tom Holland who plays Spider-Man himself told Entertainment and People, “Basically we’ve made five great movies. It’s been five amazing years. I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life. It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.” (Entertainment and People).

Holland seems hopeful for the future, and surely he wanted to give the fans some comfort in the fact that he will continue to be Spider-Man. Even though it is devastating for some to see their favorite Avenger out of the MCU, some are looking forward to whatever the future holds for our favorite Spider superhero. We know it will be sensational.
