A Doomed Crossing?

If you are a gamer, you are probably excited about all the big games this year. Especially with this March having a lot of good releases coming up.  Some of those games are Nioh 2, Ghost Recon Breakpoint and even a new Half-Life called Half-Life Alyx. But there are two games that outshine all of them, which is Doom Enteral and Animal Crossing: New Horizon, some of the longest waited games this year.

Now if you don’t anything about either of these games they are very much polar opposite from each other in all ways. Doom Eternal is a very hardcore game. It’s about demons down to Earth wreaking havoc on the planet, so it is your job as the Doom Slayer to take down these demons in gruesome and sometimes disgusting ways with the many tools given to you.

“Doom is an extremely fast paced and high intensity game that is a blast to play, all while containing a good story and good progression,” Cale Barnes (‘21) said.

Then on the whole other side, we have Animal Crossing: New Horizon, where you play as a villager, on an island where you get to build houses, catch bugs and fish, and even become the mayor of the tiny island you live on and help out the other villagers.

The animal crossing games are just really calming and peaceful and I personally much prefer it to games like Doom,” said  Alexis Mettes (‘21).

As you can see, these games are very different from each other, but there is one thing they both shared which was the day they came out.

Now a shared release does not sound like much, but with this small connection, it really changed a lot. Now, most of the time, if something like this were to happen to two other games, the two fanbases would have a full war with each other, about which games are better and mostly just end in hostility on both sides. However, that is not the case with these two. Instead of the normal clashes and fights, both sides were happy for each other new game coming out, even making memes about it.

It is kind of funny, especially with seeing the memes of Isabelle playing and fangirling over Doom,” Jillian Murrah-Rose (‘23) said.

There also have been memes of the Doom Slayer being in the world of Animal Crossing with all the other villagers. The meme got so big that both developers of the games have had some fun with it, like the Doom twitter promoting Animal Crossing.  Now with both games out, the meme has died down, but still, both communities still bond over each other games. But maybe around the corner, a crossover of the two games will happen, maybe will see Isabelle fighting with the Doom slayer or the Doom slayer fishing and catching some bugs in Animal Crossing.

Either way, it nice to see these two games come together even though the difference they have and hopefully make a stronger bond in the gaming community.
