Fighting the Hype

Having to live up to the expectations of the “Big Boys”

The art of making movies is a form of art rapidly growing, and people love it. It is a two hour adventure that wows viewers and a good film sticks with audiences for years to come. However, once one movie is made, it is difficult at times to make a second movie that stands up to or surpasses the first.  This is something that has been faced multiple times toward the end of this year, since the next movie in tons of franchises are coming, or have come out.

One of the most well known movie creator companies, Disney, is taking the plunge on Thanksgiving and releasing their new movie, “Moana.” “Moana” is the next in a long line of Disney Princesses, and matching up with some great classics such as “Cinderella,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Snow White” will be a challenge.  However, Disney always manages to please, and while this movie hasn’t been extremely hyped, it is sure to live up to all of the predecessors. After all, Disney seems to know what to do when it comes to princesses.

On the other end of the spectrum, sort of, Marvel is on a roll in making new movies in their series. Having just dropped “Doctor Strange,” which did wonderfully in box offices and critic reviews. However, having to follow box office phenomenons like both “Avengers” movies and “Captain America Civil War,’ it is hard to top. Luckily the creators didn’t have to worry, and neither do fans; “Doctor Strange” was a film that held it’s own against the “big guys.”

On the topic of holding it’s own, David Yates had to take a big leap of faith to take up the mantle on what our generation might classify as one of the best movie series,  the “Harry Potter” series. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is the newest movie in the  world J.K. Rowling created, and while it doesn’t include our old beloved favorites, it is still a hard film to get to meet up to people’s standards. The bar is set sky high after coming out of the 10 year franchise, but “Fantastic Beasts” is determined to hold on. While it has been hyped, it has managed to keep from being over hyped, which is a great thing; saving a movie from being over hyped is one of the best things for a follow up film. After all, when it doesn’t touch people’s already high expectations, or when it does, it helps save the film, and make it great for viewers everywhere.

There are tons of films throughout the age that have had to live up to the expectations of their forerunners. This is an art that is hard to do, having to make things bigger and better than before, yet fight the strain of over hype and critics. Luckily, people’s favorite new movies seem to live up to their expectations, a struggle for the ages.
