Netflix Newbie

Netflix’s New YA Adaptation

It was recently released that pop-star Selena Gomez is on the production crew for a new Netflix series based on the chilling YA novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher.

The novel follows Clay Jensen, who comes home to a box on his porch containing a cassette player and tapes. The tapes are made by Hannah Baker; she was Clay’s classmate who committed suicide two weeks before. Hannah explains on the tapes that there were thirteen reasons why she ended her life and Clay is one of them, but he must listen to all of them in order to find out how he played a part.

Through Clay and Hannah’s narratives-Clay as he listens, Hannah as she explains-Jay Asher offers a heart-string-pulling honest portrayal of teenage suicide. Asher gives an intricately woven story that is equally shocking as it is beautiful.

On the social media platform of Instagram, Selena Gomez posted the very first teaser trailer for the new show. It stars Dylan Minnette as Clay and Katherine Langford as Hannah. The show is slated for 13 episodes airing March 31, 2017 on Netflix.

The success of other Netflix originals such as The Crown and Stranger Things sheds some hope for the debut of this adaptation. The novelization was absolutely incredible, scoring a 4/5 on Goodreads, which leads some fans into skepticism on a show adaptation.

All support goes to the producers, actors, and directors.
