For the third time in league history, a team with the best record in their conference has secured the number one pick in the NBA draft. The Boston Celtics are now on the clock and are followed by the Los Angeles Lakers and the Philadelphia 76ers, respectively.

These top three picks are all of particular interest for very different reasons. The Boston Celtics famously owned the Brooklyn Nets in a 2013 trade that will forever live in basketball infamy. Boston traded three players who had been stars in the past, but were old and shells of their former selves. Brooklyn, on the other hand, gave up their first round draft picks for the 2014, 2016, and 2018 NBA Drafts, as well as giving Boston the right to swap first round picks in 2017 should the Nets pick be higher than the Celtics. It is the trade that keeps on giving, helping build them into a potential future dynasty should they get these draft picks right, or trade them for an established star.

The Lakers are reportedly “enamored” with former UCLA point guard Lonzo Ball, per ESPN’s Chad Ford. Ball, who is almost a lock to be a top three pick regardless of whether or not the Lakers select him, has one clear drawback, and it has nothing to do with him. His father, LaVar, is extremely outspoken about his son’s basketball career. Magic Johnson, now the Lakers President of Basketball Operations, has stated that LaVar has no impact at all on the team’s evaluation of Lonzo. All this talk would have been for naught had the lottery balls not been in favor of the franchise, however. Los Angeles would have lost their pick to the Philadelphia 76ers, had it landed outside of the top three picks. Fortunately for the Lakers, luck was on their side.

Speaking of the 76ers, they have the third pick in the draft anyway, thanks to a trade with the Sacramento Kings, who have the fifth pick as result of the trade. The 76ers also get the Lakers 2018 pick because Los Angeles kept their pick this year. Philadelphia has famously coined the phrase, “Trust the Process”, after many seasons of losing. The future is finally starting to look up for the Sixers, so long as they get this pick correct and Joel “The Process” Embiid can stay healthy.

From the fourth to the 14th pick, the order is: Suns, Kings, Magic, Timberwolves, Knicks, Mavericks, Kings, Hornets, Pistons, Nuggets, and Heat.

While most of the teams in the lottery have struggled in recent years, both fell behind the prospering Celtics as the rich are getting richer.
